IMEE supports fundamental, multidisciplinary research on the impact of hazards and disasters on civil infrastructure and society. The program is focused on research on the mitigation of, preparedness for, response to, and recovery from multi-hazard disasters. Community and societal resilience and sustainability are important topics within the research portfolio of IMEE.

CIS supports fundamental and innovative research necessary for designing, constructing, managing, maintaining, operating and protecting efficient, resilient and sustainable civil infrastructure systems. Research that recognizes the role that these systems play in societal functioning and accounts for how human behavior and social organizations contribute to and affect the performance of these systems is encouraged. 

Engineering for Natural Hazards supports fundamental research that advances knowledge for understanding and mitigating the impact of natural hazards on constructed civil infrastructure. While research may focus on a single natural hazard, research that considers civil infrastructure performance over its lifetime in the context of multiple hazards, that is, a multi-hazard approach, is encouraged.

 This Program supports the study of water processes from rainfall to runoff to infiltration and streamflow; evaporation and transpiration; the flow of water in soils and aquifers; and the transport of suspended, dissolved, and colloidal components.

The program supports fundamental engineering research that will enable innovative processes for the sustainable production of electricity and fuels, and for energy storage. These processes must be environmentally benign, reduce greenhouse gas production, and use renewable resources.

The NSF seeks proposals to establish a networked set of Critical Zone Observatories (CZOs) that will address pressing interdisciplinary scientific questions concerning geological, physical, chemical, and biological processes and their couplings that govern critical zone system dynamics.

The goal of this Smart & Connected Communities (S&CC) solicitation is to support strongly interdisciplinary, integrative research and research capacity-building activities that will improve understanding of smart and connected communities and lead to discoveries that enable sustainable change to enhance community functioning

This program seeks projects that will:

1. Enhance understanding of the fundamental processes underlying natural hazards and extreme events on various spatial and temporal scales, as well as the variability inherent in them
2. Improve our capability to model and forecast such hazards and events

The CRISP solicitation seeks to fund projects likely to produce new knowledge that can contribute to making Interdependent Critical Infrastructure (ICI) services more effective, efficient, dependable, adaptable, resilient, safe, and secure, taking into account the human systems in which they are embedded.

The overarching goal of INFEWS is to catalyze well-integrated interdisciplinary and convergent research to transform scientific understanding of the Food Energy Water nexus to improve system function and management, address system stress, increase resilience, and ensure sustainability.
