Description

Special recyclables includes battery recycling. As of spring 2017, departments are welcome to fund battery recycling for their units by purchasing boxes through Call2Recycle. The boxes can be used to collect both rechargeable and single-use alkaline batteries. Full instructions for your unit to participate are available at https://icap.sustainability.illinois.edu/project/rechargeable-battery-recycling.

From 2012 to 2015, campus funded recycling of single-use alkaline batteries through Battery Solutions. Unfortunately, this funding was cut during 2015, due to overall campus budget constraints. Departments were welcome to fund their own alkaline battery recycling through the Battery Solutions program, and rechargeable battery recycling was available through a free Call2Recycle program until spring of 2017. In March 2017, Call2Recycle discontinued the free rechargeable battery recycling program and introduced a mixed bucket at a lower price than it had cost to recycle alkaline batteries alone through Battery Solutions.
