Confinement-free is a term used to describe food purchases where the animals were raised in an environment where they could freely roam, as opposed to being confined in an enclosed environment. This term may apply to meat, eggs or dairy farming. The University has taken confinement-free food purchases into consideration in purchasing eggs, chicken, pork, and beef. All local purchases of these products are confinement-free. Local purchases make up about 1 percent of the total purchases of each product.

All of the iCAP projects will need resources in order to implement them.  This project is about identifying the necessary resources for each of the iCAP objectives.

The 2010 iCAP recommended creating a UI Foundation sustainability fund.  "Develop an integrated donations strategy. Moving to a low GHG economy is swiftly emerging as the defining issue of this time. Donors will want to support iCAP efforts especially if they see the University taking a leadership role.

The University has a rich history of being supported by donors. In conjunction with the University’s more focused climate commitments, as relayed through the 2010 Illinois Climate Action Plan, donations with a sustainable focus-area will be emphasized and encouraged.

The Facilities & Services Operations, Maintenance, and Alterations division could allocate base budget funding directly to sustainability projects.

Academic Facilities Maintenance Fund Assessment (AFMFA) is an ongoing fee University students are charged each semester in order to help fund various deferred maintenance projects. In 2008, AFMFA fees provided approximately $11.5 million for deferred maintenance projects.

The iCAP 2020 objective 9.2 is to "Commit to a Sustainable Investing Policy by FY24." The responsible campus unit for championing this objective is the Office of the Chancellor.

As of 2021, the University's Investment Policy now includes the following statement:

In certain circumstances, it is impractical or not financially viable to reduce greenhouse gas emissions entirely to zero. To handle this circumstance, some entities purchase the carbon emission reduction from others. This transaction is called carbon offsets.

Our campus goal for financing sustainability is quite simple: we want to ensure that all of the best ideas for reducing our greenhouse gas emissions, as vetted by our established process of review by the SWATeams, the iCAP Working Group, and the Sustainability Council, are fully analyzed and then matched with the funding necessary to make them happen.
