Each August, thousands of new students come to the Urbana campus to participate in Welcome Week activities. Directly after new student convocation, students walk to Lot 31 to participate in the Welcome Celebration Lunch & Tabling. Dining Services serves thousands of students via buffet lines in a matter of 20-30 minutes. Tables are set up throughout the area for new students to learn about different interest groups on campus.

This project will update on bicycle infrastructure improvement on campus, which may include bicycle lanes/path, bike racks, bike repair stations, etc.

The Talbot Laboratory Addition was awarded LEED Silver certification on July 10th, 2023. The addition scored high within the Water Efficiency category, scoring 8 out of 10 points. In the Water Reduction sub category, the Laboratory gained a perfect 4 out of 4 points. 

The construction for the three story addition began in Spring of 2019. The addition will house a Nuclear Materials Lab and a Radiation Measurement Laboratory. These new facilities are shared with the Department of Nuclear, Plasma, and Radiological Engineering as well as the Department of Aerospace Engineering. 

The Illinois Street Residence (ISR) Townsend Hall received LEED silver status on Jun 14th, 2022. Townsend Hall is one of two dormitory facilities which make up ISR Hall. The recent renovations to ISR had strong scores in Location and Transportation, scoring 13 out of 16 possible points. In addition to Water Efficiency, scoring 8 out of 11 possible points. ISR is known for its proximity to the engineering campus and houses many future STEM students. 

Illinois Street Residence (ISR) Dining Hall was awarded LEED Sliver certification on April 18th, 2022. The construction scored 20 out of 26 possible points in the Sustainable sites category, with a prioritization in Alternative Transportation. As one of the largest dining centers, ISR Dining Hall is a hub that see high foot traffic everyday. A unique feature of the new hall is its 8 micro restaurants, which serve a variety of meal options.

In order to effectively increase recycling rates on campus, the community must be adequately informed on what the Waste Transfer Station can accept, and what it cannot. Campus recycles 5 primary commodities: paper, cardboard, plastic, aluminum, and scrap metal. There are a myriad of other products that present themselves on campus, and community members would benenfit from a resource that outlines the appropriate disposal methods.

Recyclopedia was born of the desire and need to offer the community a comprehensive recycling guide.

In early 2023, undergraduate students Hannah Kim and Sakshi Vaya proposed Project Revert to Earth, with the aim to tackle food waste contamination in recycling streams on campus. Funded by the SSC, the research study aims to understand students' behavior toward recycling and how those behaviors would change if recycling became easier and more accessible.

In 2018, PRI Sustainability Researcher/F&S Zero Waste Coordinator Shantanu Pai began to investigate services which could accurately weigh frontload pans when they were dumped into frontload trucks. Unlike swingpan and rolloff pans, which are individually taken to the Waste Transfer Station for weighing and dumping, many individual frontload containers are dumped into a single truck, and the lump sum is weighed at the Waste Transfer Station.
