This project was to fund the development of a large-scale food waste composting facility on the University’s property, in order to compost food waste from University dining halls.  This project was precipitated by the commitment made by the University in the 2010 Illinois Climate Action Plan (iCAP): “The University will commit to… a large‐scale food composting project by 2012.”

The University has worked to restore the 2.7-acre no-mow zone at the southwest corner of Florida Avenue and Orchard Street, as one of the campus’ first prairie plantings.  This restoration is designed to educate, beautify, and inspire. It will serve as a highly visible public symbol of our commitments to (1) the historic ecological legacy and the native species once found in this complex ecosystem and (2) campus-wide efforts toward sustainability and carbon neutral practices.

In order to connect commuters with other commuters traveling from the same origin to campus, or from campus to the same destination, the University should provide a ride-matching program.  Before this internet, there was a car-pool board on a wall in the Illini Union.  Now, there are simple electronic tools for finding ride sharing partners.  However, there is a need to be careful about who you select as a ride sharing contact.  There are numerous programs that utilize social media to help review potential ridesharing partners before contacting them to share a ride.  The campus needs to ide

The iCAP 2020 objective 3.5 is to "Reduce net air travel emissions from FY14 baseline: 50% by FY24 and 100% by FY30." The responsible campus unit for championing this objective is iSEE.

Facilities & Services (F&S) at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign operates a fleet of nearly 300 vehicles supporting maintenance activities across this campus. F&S is making a commitment to lead the University in reaching the iCAP goals related to University motor vehicle transportation. The primary F&S fleet, the Truck Pool, meets two main criteria that allow it to lead the University in attaining the transportation related iCAP goals:

Founded in the spring semester of 2006, Illinois Biodiesel Initiative first and foremost serves to produce and provide biodiesel to the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign’s Garage and Carpool services using waste vegetable oil from the University dining halls. Ride-sharing for business trips is a common solution for limited travel budgets.  There is a natural implementation of ride-sharing when there are multiple staff traveling to the same destination at the same time.  However, the University needs to encourage ride-sharing for employees from different origin locations and it needs to offer a solution for finding the rides available for car pooling.
