Support Youth Sustainability

The iCAP 2020 objective 7.5 is to "Support programs to develop love of nature and sustainability among children, with an annual Youth Sustainability Summit led by local teenagers with guidance and mentoring from campus and community sustainability leaders." The responsible campus unit for championing this objective is UI Extension.

Karma Trade

Created by UIUC undergraduate student, Mona Fang, Karma Trade is a zero-waste clothing swap service where you can trade in your old clothing for equal value store credit.

This is how the Karma Trade clothing swap works:

1) Start a Karma Trade account at the store

2) Bring in unwanted clothes in exchange for "Karma Points" which can be used to buy items at the store

3) To purchase items, Karma Points are used in addition to a small monetary charge for operational costs

4) Check the online portal to see how many Karma Points are remaining in the account

Meadow at Orchard Downs

The goal of this project is to successfully restore the low-mow site at Orchard Downs Housing Facility to a meadow garden that has more function and biodiversity. This project will incorporate at least 25 native plant species, create habitat for wildlife and pollinators, and increase biodiversity overall. Other goals of this project are to give students hands-on experience and restoration skills. Additionally, it will be important to educate students and the community about Native American Culture through the land acknowledgement.

NRES 285: iCAP Sustainability Ambassadors

The goal of this course is to have students understand how to implement climate action policy through examination of  University building stock and personnel behavior and developing recommendations to alter both stock and behavior to achieve iCAP 2020 goals. This is a building-level, “bottom-up” approach to campus sustainability, where students will be connected with facility managers to gain an applicable understanding of sustainability opportunities.

Course Objectives:

Campus Race to Zero Waste

In 2014, UIUC participated in a national race for campuses across the country to show their commitment to recycling and reducing landfill waste. After a 7-year break, the university is once again making large strides to foster our Illini commitment to protecting the environment. The Campus Race to Zero Waste, formerly known as Recyclemania, often takes place in the spring semester of the academic year.

Building Envelope Pilot Project

Based upon building energy modeling and actual results from residential projects we believe a 20-30% reduction in energy usage is achievable when the building envelope is properly installed and verified. We have many buildings on campus where the envelope should be inspected, tested, and appropriately improved to address the energy lost through improper installation and or maintenance.
